Yes, if you are traveling on behalf of Virginia Tech, you or a delegate are required to complete a preapproval in the Emburse Enterprise System for international travel.
- Yes, all U.S. Citizens traveling outside the continental United States should have a valid U.S. passport, with an expiration date at least 6 months after the end of your travel dates

Visa requirements depend on your destination and the purpose of your travel. The United States currently has Visa Waiver Programs in place with 42 countries, allowing travelers to visit for tourism without a visa. For a complete and updated list of the 42 countries, refer to the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
For other types of travel or for destinations not included in the Visa Waiver Program, consult the country-specific information available on the U.S. Department of State's website.

- Check the list and visit your doctor (4-6 weeks) before your trip
- A minimum of two weeks prior to your departure date of travel. If you do not have an approved preapproval at least two weeks prior to travel, you should contact the Global Education Office, VTGlobalSafety@vt.edu
- A preapproval will still be required to be completed in the Emburse Enterprise System

Quick Tips
- Travelers should ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their return date and contains at least two blank pages, as some countries may deny entry if these requirements are not met
- Notify your bank and credit card companies of your upcoming international travel, including your travel dates. Confirm that your credit and debit cards will be accepted in your destination country
- Research the electrical outlets and voltage requirements for your travel destination. You may need to purchase appropriate converters and adapters prior to departure
- Make two copies of all of your travel documents in case of emergency and leave one copy with a trusted friend or relative
- Pack a carry-on bag with essential items you cannot afford to lose, such as your passport, medications, and a change of clothes
